The year is...
1880. You are the daughter of a wealthy physician who helped to pioneer Lima, Ohio- one of seven children. At 18 years old, you have received more education than most women- and most children- in the United States. In fact, you are currently going to school at the University of Wooster! You are one of a small number of elite women who are college-educated. It has only been 43 years since the first woman was admitted to any college. In two years, you will graduate from the college and soon after marry Scottish emigrant William Annat. Together, you will have five children. For many years, you will stay at home, keeping house and caring for your children. However, you remain an engaged alumna of the College, and serve as a member of the Executive Committee for the Alumni Association in 1906. On August 18th of 1920, you, along with the other women in the United States, will be granted the right to vote! You are very excited about this and work hard to fulfill your civic duty. Over the next two decades, you will experience the excess of the 1920s and weather the hardships of the Great Depression. However, another big change is coming your way- World War II. Even though the U.S. has not officially entered the war, the men in Wayne County are preparing to leave to help the British fight on the European battlefields, and you and your fellow women step up and fill their roles. While many women went to work in factories, you decide to step into the political sphere, and become the first Chairman of the Wayne County Republican Organization. Having done your part, and reaching the ripe age of 80, you pass away peacefully in 1941. What a life!
Your name is...
Mrs. Vinnie Harper Annat.
